I personally didn’t really like this book. I thought it was pretty boring and Ray Bradbury’s writing style was…strange. But there were some exciting parts amidst all of that ‘other stuff’. Anyways, a passage that is significant to me… Page 144, paragraph 9…
“There must have been a billion leaves on the land; he waded in them, a dry river smelling of hot cloves and warm dust. And the other smells! There was a smell like a cut potato from all the land, raw and cold and white from having the moon on it most of the night. There was a smell like pickles from a bottle and a smell like parsley on the table at home. There was a smell like carnations from the yard next door. He put down his hand and felt a weed rise up like a child brushing him. His fingers smelled of licorice.”
This passage sounds kind of weird. I mean its all about smells and that’s pretty weird. But even though it’s a tad bit weird, this passage is significant to me.
Guy Montag described these smells when he first enters the forest after exiting the river. (When he was running away from the Hound because he murdered Captain Beatty). This reminds me of when I first came to Korea. Just like Montag noticed all the new and different smells in the forest, I noticed all the new and different smells in Korea. It was quite bizarre really, because that was one of the first things I noticed about Korea: its smells. I can’t really explain the ‘smell’ but I know what it is and could recognize it anywhere. This passage is significant and meaningful to me because it reminds me of a big chapter in my life…moving to Korea.

That's really cute of you (??? hmm...) Well anyways, I liked that passage although it was kind of... strange and hard to understand. I know your feelings too. The passage was signifant to me too. I felt the same feeling of Montag and also you:) When I went to America of an age where I was mature enough to understand things... I felt really strange. I could smell the whole different things than Korea. Not the visual but the sense of smell was different and felt strange. Well, anyways, good thoughts! =D
So thats how you felt when you first came to Korea. I'm not sure if I sort of liked that passage. Sounded too wierd. I know how you must have felt when you first came to Korea, I could 'see' that when I came to Korea too. It sure makes a person feel curious and awkward when you come to a new kind of place.
I was curious of why you thought that passage was significant to you but after reading your opinion and reasons, I was quite impressed on how you connected your situation to Montag's sitation. I also feel that you and Montag would have had the same feeling at that time for you both came to totally different places and feel different things. It was interesting to read that passage you have chose realtaed to your own life! It was nice to read, but it would have been better if you had explained how you felt about coming to different place and put your own thoughts more.^^
Heyy! okay... I really agree with what you have wrote on your first entry. Montag smelled something different when he first went in to the that forest. Well, I,like you and Montag, have smelled something when I went back to America on Forth grade. Of course I don't remember what it smelled like when I was like one year old , but when I first when to American airport, I smelled something. I can't really explain what that smell is. It's.... really Fresh? anyways my sister and I still remember that smell, and every time we get our new clothes from America or smell certain type of perufume we say 'it smells like America!=)' Actually, Costco smells like America too!!
Wow.. I am seriously rolling on the floor laughing. Yuri and Jojo thinks I'm extremely weird right now. Nice connection when you first came to Korea. I can relate that when I first went to America in 3rd grade for the first time in many many years.
