Twilight. This book/movie is what everyone is talking about these days. I never really knew why until I started reading the book. I must say I am hooked, absolutely hooked! I want to read this book 24/7 but sadly I can’t as my agenda is packed with homework…
Anyways, getting to the point of this blog:
I told my mum I was reading Twilight and she had no objections, just one comment. She commented on the fact that she doesn’t think that it is right for something that is evil to be perceived as something good. Just like Edward and his family is seen as the good vampires in this book. This got me thinking.
One of the thoughts that entered my head was surely there is good in everyone and thing, but then when I really thought about it I came to the conclusion that that is not necessarily always true. I mean take Satan for example. I have a very hard time trying to find something good about him.
The second thought that entered my mind was that I don’t really know what I think about mum’s comment. I know that I won’t fall for believing that vampires can be good and that me reading or watching something that portrays something bad as good will affect my faith in God. Yet, that’s about all I know.
Mum’s comment about people, these days, making something evil seem actually good just got me thinking. And quite honestly I don’t know where I stand within her comment.

I think that when you want to draw the reader into something new or perhaps to do something on the edge of their imagination there is degree in which you can draw the reader into the mystery of the plot or perhaps the mystery of a character by twisting what is common into something different even unthinkable. To turn a vampire into something touchable, human or perhaps understandable pushes our common held perspective of what we are used to. Is this type of thinking and writing appropriate and valid, by all means- yes. Yet is this type of writing value free- no. In that regard we need to fall back to an absolute- which many people are uncomfortable with because we are always seeking to create our own reality and truth. However when something is considered good it is because there is a comparison- something must be bad. Just like we can not determine what is dark unless there is an absence of light- it is a comparison. When we move or redesign or reconstruct something bad to represent something good, then we alter what is good- because the previous method of determining it's goodness has been changed. The question is- who has the authority or right to alter this position? If we say the writer then we are saying that they can determine morality, right and wrong- which leads to no absolutes- what is right for you is right for you. However in a biblical perspective right is determined by what God considers to be wrong- there is no side stepping the issue here, unless we want to determine a right or wrong or in other words say - we can play God. Isn't that wrong? Who says?
